Bra Measuring Advice

Those in the know reckon that 80% of us are wearing the wrong size bra, with most of us wearing a back size that is too big and a cup size that is too small. Not only does this mean that we aren’t supporting our breasts in the right way (which could lead to unsightly saggy boobs in the not so distant future, as well as back and neck ache) but in addition, if you get fitted into a correctly fitting bra, it can totally transform your figure, putting the curves back in the right places and changing your silhouette dramatically. So, we would strongly recommend getting yourself down to one of our High Street stores and getting yourself measured professionally. Most of you will be pleasantly surprised - it’s great to learn that you’re actually slimmer round your rib cage and bigger up front than you thought. However, this isn’t a one-off activity - we recommend that you go back for a fitting every 3 - 6 months or so. Our bodies are constantly changing so it’s important that we keep monitoring our bra size on an ongoing basis. "Can I measure myself?" we hear some of you ask....well, sorry girls, but we wouldn’t recommend it. It’s difficult to measure yourself accurately, so you could still end up buying the wrong size. The consultants in our stores are specially trained to provide you with an accurate fit - and remember, they see hundreds of boobs a day, so there’s no need to be embarrassed - they will always be discreet, professional and will work hard to put you at ease.
So what are you waiting for……transform your figure today.

Below is a list of common problems we are asked about:

  • Problem: The band at the back of the bra rides up.
  • Explanation: The band of the bra is too big
  • Solution: You need a bra with a smaller back size.
  • Problem: Under wire digging in under the armpit.
  • Explanation: Your cup is too small, the under wire should encase the breast not dig into it.
  • Solution: You need a bra with a bigger cup size.

  • Problem: Indents in the shoulder where the straps have dug in.
  • Explanation: Your bra is too big in the back and not big enough in the cup, this is causing you to pull the straps up too tight for support.
  • Solution: You need a bra, which is smaller in the back & bigger in the cup.
  • Problem: Breasts falling out of the bottom of under wire.
  • Explanation: The band of your bra is too big and the Cup is too small.
  • Solution: You need a bra which is smaller in the back and bigger in the cup.
  • Problem: Bumpy silhouette under clothes.
  • Explanation: Cup encasing breast is too small and so causes breast to overspill.
  • Solution: You need to increase your cup size, until you have a smooth silhouette.

There are lots of different shapes and styles of bras around these days and sometimes it is difficult to know which one’s best for you. We’ve listed the main shapes available, and the different benefits each one has. You’ll probably find you have different needs depending on what occasion the bra is for – a strapless bra is not the most suitable bra for running around at work all day, but perfect under that glamorous evening dress.

Full Cup Bra
  • If you wear a larger cup size then a full cup bra will be your lingerie drawer staple. This is the most comfortable and supportive bra of them all and will be what you turn to day in and day out. This bra provides a firm fit to keep your bust supported which reduces sagging in years to come. Despite the obvious benefits, in the past these bras have had a reputation as being a bit frumpy but we hope that we have helped to change this perception as we have improved them by providing them in flattering styles and pretty fabrics and colours which are more feminine than ever before.
Balcony Bra
  • This is probably the most popular style of bra, as it’s great for everyday wear as well as feeling special enough for a night out too. A balcony shape is designed to keep you uplifted, but also aims to look as natural as possible. It also provides firm support for enhanced comfort which is why it’s so perfect for everyday wear – we might not often admit it, but if you’re wearing a bra all day, comfort’s going to come fairly high on the priority list for most of us. The lower cut shape and wide set straps give this bra a more seductive look making it the perfect bra to take you from day to night in comfort and style.
Smooth Cup Bra
  • Your lingerie should enhance your outerwear by giving you a smooth silhouette but this can be difficult when wearing a close fitting t-shirt. Lace and seams create unsightly lumps and bumps that do nothing to enhance your figure. Developments in technology now enable us to create moulded bras which are totally seam free yet still able to give you the support you need to feel uplifted and secure. For discreet lingerie that really does its jobs, it doesn’t come better than a moulded smooth cup bra.

Strapless Bra
  • This bra shape is essential if you like to wear strappy tops and dresses that show off your shoulders. Unsightly bra straps can ruin this look so invest in a strapless bra that fits snugly around the back to keep it in place and makes you feel secure. We wouldn’t recommend that you wear this bra everyday as its not as supportive as a bra with straps, but it is great for those summer evenings when you want to wear something strappy but thought you never could because of your bust size. This bra could totally transform your wardrobe!

You have now been blessed with fantastic boobs, courtesy of Louise's Boutique Ltd, so make the most of them.

Once you have been fitted with your correct bra size the next step is getting your bra on correctly. Putting a bra on is as easy as Swoop and Scoop.

Simply follow these steps to ensure your bra is a perfect fit.

Firstly, lean forward and allow your breasts to fall into your bra (what we call the swoop) so they sit in place naturally and comfortably. Then fasten the bra on the loosest hook and stand up. Lastly, scoop each breast gently into place in the bra (remember that breast tissue goes all the way to the underarm) to ensure they are comfortably positioned and not caught in the underwire or spilling out of the sides and use your index finger to smooth across the top cup edge to ensure there is no overspill.

And there you have it.
